SHPE at TU

TU-SHPE began in the fall semester of 2014. Thanks to our adviser Dr. Diaz, a group of students gathered together haphazardly throughout a course of three days to create the founding bylaws of the University of Tulsa chapter. Throughout the first semester, TU-SHPE started out with a couple professional events, which became more frequent in the spring. We had Phillips66 come speak to our membership about various opportunities at their company, as well as a past alumnus who talked about her experiences with SHPE and how it affected her as a professional. We started out unexperienced, but we were ready to learn.

That spring, the President of TU-SHPE traveled to Denton, Texas to the Regional Leadership Development Conference as the only representative from Oklahoma. Later in the summer, the previous and current President journeyed to Facebook headquarters and joined other SHPE leaders at the National Institute for Leadership Advancement. They brought inspiration and enthusiasm from NILA, which they shared with their eBoard to plan for the next semester.

TU-SHPE has collaborated with OkState SHPE to hold a Noche de Ciences at a local high school which involved approximately 100 people working together to promote STEM field among the youth in the Tulsa community. Later that semester, we also aimed to send ten members to the Baltimore Conference, and we exceeded it; we sent thirteen. We were able to finance the trip through various third parties and ourselves, enough so members did not worry about finances and were able to fully capitalize from the trip. We pride ourselves on making an impact on our community and we think the best way to do that is by getting our members involved.
